Lincoln History

In 1856, Lincoln was established as a village in Lancaster by some prospectors who were building a salt industry in the area. In 1859, it became the county seat of Lancaster. In 1867, Nebraska was formed as a State and Lancaster replaced Omaha as the capital of the State of Nebraska. In 1869, Lancaster was named Lincoln in honor of the sixteen American President- Abraham Lincoln. In The University of Nebraska was founded in 1869.

Nebraska History Museum: Learn about the Native American cultures of the Great Plains at the Nebraska History Museum.  

Sunken Gardens:  Stroll through the Sunken Gardens that features a great flora display, lily ponds, sculptures, and a waterfall. A lovely spot to relax and take in the beauty of the nature! 

National Museum of Roller Skating: Get ready for wheeled fun at the National Museum of Roller Skating.  It has inline skating, recreational skating, roller derby, and several exhibits that highlight the roller skating history.

Pioneers Park Nature Center:  Pioneers Park Nature Center has hiking and biking trails, public art, picnic areas, a golf course, an outdoor amphitheatre and other outdoor pleasures.

University of Nebraska State Museum: University of Nebraska State Museum is also known as the “Elephant Hall”. It features Nebraska’s natural history, and houses a hands-on discovery center, Mueller Planetarium, fossil mammoth and paleontology exhibits.  

 International Quilt Study Center & Museum: Check out an impressive collection of quilts at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. It houses over 4500 quilts in its collection dating from early seventeenth century to the present.
